Draft Culture of Peace Programme in Mozambique 5

II. THE FIRST PHASE OF THE CULTURE OF PEACE PROGRAMME IN MOZAMBIQUE

The present proposal for the Culture of Peace Programme in Mozambique is to be the second phase of a long-term, multi-phase programme. In the first phase of the Programme, a campaign of information and networking was carried out with other programmes and organizations presently working in Mozambique on the culture of peace and related issues. A number of these organizations took part in the Steering Committee which was formed to guide the Programme. Specific projects were undertaken for the training of women as peace promoters, the use of music for peace, and on the production of materials based on Mozambican traditions of peace-making (books, radio programmes, etc.).

The first phase of the Culture of Peace Programme was elaborated in Mozambique beginning in February 1994 following an intense period of preparation by the National Commission for UNESCO in Mozambique and by UNESCO headquarters in Paris. UNESCO provided seed money of $120,000 in order to initiate activities.

The following activities were undertaken in the context of the Programme during the eight months until October.
