Draft Culture of Peace Programme in Mozambique 8

3. The Projects

3.1 MULEIDE (Women for Law and Development)

Two training seminars were undertaken, one in the city of Maputo and the other in the Province of Maputo for the in-service training of community organizers. 38 women, coming from leadership roles in major women's organizations - MULEIDE, OMM (Organization of Mozambican Women) and ADOCA (Association of Housewives) - were trained in the seminars. They are being deployed in virtually all provinces of Mozambique.

3.2 NCUM (National Commission for UNESCO)

The Mozambique National Commission for UNESCO organized and carried out a National Conference on Culture of Democracy and Peace in the city of Beira which included participation by political, religious and intellectual personalities from all areas of Mozambique. The Conference took place for three days with the participation of 28 persons who came from various political tendencies. A report from the conference was prepared and from this a book is being published on Culture, Democracy and Peace.

Audio cassettes recorded during the Conference were broadcast by radio in Beira and Maputo. Also, newspapers in Beira and Maputo devoted coverage to the Conference and TVM (Mozambican Television) took some clips which were diffused on their regular television programming.

3.3 AEMO

The Mozambican Association of Writers produced two books in simple language that can be read by the average reader and secondary school students.

One of the books, Stories of Reconciliation, was prepared on the basis of stories collected from oral tradition in most of the ten provinces of Mozambique.

The other book contains contemporary stories of peace and reconciliation by Mozambican writers.

ARO JUVENIL , an organization of young writers related to AEMO, conducted a contest for young writers on the theme of peace and reconciliation. Results of the contest are expected soon. This contest involved about 60 young writers.

The writers are also participating in the elaboration and description of the activities developed in the Programme by MULEIDE.

3.4 AMMO

The Mozambican Association of Musicians traveled to the Provinces of Sofala and Manica to give concerts on peace in those two provinces. In collaboration with OMM, they are in the process of recording cassettes of songs of peace and reconciliation sung by the women of that organization.

3.5 ARPAC

The Archives of Cultural Patrimony prepared a seminar on civic education in national languages which was carried out in Beira. The terminology for the electoral campaign and election procedures had been previously worked out in the various national languages and this was used in radio broadcast messages.

The Casa da Cultura do Alto-Maé, working in coordination with ARPAC, is going to produce a theatre video and theatre recordings for radio broadcast. At this time tests are underway and the play is being adapted for radio broadcast.

A radio theatre play was translated into national languages and broadcast on 11 radio stations

3.6 CEA

The Center for African Studies will undertake a study in spring 1995 on the experiences of the activists trained by the project under the direction of MULEIDE in order to evaluate the impact of the training and the consciousness and skills that were acquired.

3.7 Other Actions

In addition to specific actions foreseen by the Programme, a number of other simultaneous and related actions took place to promote a culture of peace.

A space was created in the bulletin of the National Organization of Journalists for a regular column entitled "Cultivating Peace". This column has made it possible to provide information and messages which promote a culture of peace.

Three posters were designed and published, including two for civic education for the elections, and one, on the occasion of the above-mentioned Conference on Reconciliation Before, During, and After the Election. These posters were distributed through various channels throughout the country.
