page 3 - February 10, 1986 Questions have arisen on a number of occasions about the purpose of our Statement on Violence. As you know from our previous correspondence: 1) The Statement on Violence is to be a scientific and not a political document. None of us are politicians and none of us are coming to Seville as representatives of political constituencies. All of us are scientists and we all represent one and the same international multi-disciplinary scientific community that cannot be diVided by geography or discipline. 2) The Statement on violence does not intend to address all questions of violence (e.g. crime, violence in the family, etc.) any more than the Statement on Race could address all questions of race. Instead, we are focusing on one question only. It is worded well in the title of the one-page statement that I will circulate to you from Robert Hinde: “Statement on the biological factors that are said to pose an insurmountable obstacle to world peace.” 3) The Statement on Violence will be issued only in the names of those individual participants who agree with the wording of the final draft It will not be issued in the name of any organization, whether UNESCO, ISRA, etc., etc. It will be submitted to organizations such as UNESCO for their consideration. Needless to say, no individual or organization can agree in advance to sponsor a document that has not yet been drafted. Thank you for the enthusiastic support that you have all given to this difficult and important project. As I look at the list of participants and anticipate our working together in Seville, I feel certain that we can make a real and positive contribution to the struggle for world peace in our times.
