precisely from... biological and medical researchers. If it had come from sociologists, social psychologists, etc., it would have been easier to brush off as another move in the old battle between nature and nurture paradigms." --- THE CANADIAN PSYCHOLOGISTS FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY have endorsed the Seville Statement and recommended it to the CANADIAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION for endorsement and circulation (letter enclosed from national coordinator Tana Dineen). Dr. Dineen has also presented the Statement to a conference on Psychology and Peace in Toronto, and will present it to the annual meeting of the Canadian Psychological Association and to a meeting of psychologists (SIP) in Havana in June. The Canadian developments parallel events in the United States, where the Board of Scientific Affairs of the AMERICAN PSYCHOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION has recommended endorsement of the Statement by the Board of Directors, who will be meeting in June, a process initiated by the US PSYCHOLOGISTS FOR SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY. --- THE AMERICAN ANTHROPOLOGICAL ASSOCIATION endorsement reported in our February newsletter has led to publication in ANTHROPOLOGY NEWSLETTER and widespread interest and discussion including classroom use of the Statement, according to our correspondent Douglas Fry. In response to the anthropologists' action and the urging of Richard I. Ford, retiring chair of Section H (Anthro- pology), the AMERICAN ASSOCIATION FOR ADVANCEMENT OF SCIENCE is planning a symposium on anthropological understanding of violence and aggression at their 1988 annual meeting in Boston, where it should receive extensive press coverage. --- WORLDWIDE PUBLICITY for the Seville Statement continues to develop. In LATIN AMERICA, it has been published by INTERCIENCIA (copy enclosed) which reaches a broad scientific audience. In FINLAND, it was distributed and discussed by Kirsti Lagerspetz at a seminar arranged by the Finnish Ministry of Education and its UNESCO commission. And in AUSTRALIA, S.A. (Tony) Barnett. one of the Statement signatories, has popularized it in a talk on the ABC Science Show. A draft of his talk is available from me on request. --- IN THE UNITED STATES the Seville Statement has recently been endorsed by the WORLD FEDERALIST ASSOCIATION and by the Executive Director of the CONSORTIUM ON PEACE RESEARCH, EDUCATION, AND DEVELOPMENT, Clinton Fink, It has also been covered in recent publications of the latter organization (COPRED CHRONICLE), as well as newsletters of the NATIONAL COALITION ON TELEVISION VIOLENCE and the newsletter of the AMERICANS FOR THE UNIVERSALITV OF UNESCO. --- ESSAYS ON VIOLENCE is the title of a new book containing many of the background papers for the Seville Statement. The flyer for the book, published at the University of Seville by J. Martin Ramirez, is enclosed. Another book, edited by Robert Hinde and Jo Groebel, is being assembled for publication soon. --- THE HARRY FRANK GUGGENHEIM FOUNDATION of New York has issued a grant for $2000 to fund publication of this newsletter for the coming year. The grant is administered by the President's Fund at Wesleyan University "to aid in the publication and distribution of the Seville Statement on Violence." Marking this new stage of our work, I enclose a table of contents of previous newsletters which are available on request. The newsletter is now sent to 170 people in 41 countries, but in many cases it goes to only one person in a country. Please send me suggestions for additional names for the mailing list as well as news about the Statement for upcoming newsletters. Peace, David Adams Corresponding Secretary
