Stratford on Aug 21 - 5k - 29:12 (9:25 pace), 3rd over 70, 282/475 (John Howell from Easton was 8:39 and Robert Salerno from Monroe was 8:59). No other 70 year old was under 10:00, nor was there a 69 year old ahead of me. Howell was 8:19 at New Haven last Labor Day, while I was 8:48. He lost 20 seconds and I lost 37 seconds, not bad. Last year I was 9:39 in Branford Road Race.
New Haven on Sept 6 - 5k - 27:48 (lost 10 sec on start) (8:57 pace), 5th in 70-74 (John Howell and one other 75 year old were also ahead of me. Others ahead of me (way ahead) were a guy from Hawaii (Towse), Ray Prest from Northern CT, Tom Butterfield from around here, and John Thomas from NY. The next one behind me was over 9:30 pace. In general, it's a good start for the year! (Last year I was 27:22 and 8:48). Sofia and Rachel ran in 14:25.
East Haven on Sept 11 - 5k - 27:54 (only runner in 70-9 category)(8:44, 9:00, 9:16) Martha Merz won the overall women at age 47 with 19+ min!
Up and down East Rock on Sept 19 - 5 miles in 48:30 (second by 20 seconds in the 70+ category) splits: 9:06, 19:48 (10:42), 30:00 (10:12), 9:15, 9:15
Lennie's 4 miler on Oct 17 - 35:13, 5 sec faster than last year (8:49 pace), 76/134 1st prize trophy. Fred Smith ran in a 7:15 pace! Splits in 8:15, 17:05, 26?
Bridgeport 5k - 26:46 - medal for being the second over 60 yrs old (no category for 70+) - pace was 8:39, the best so far this year. Fred also ran well.
Lightnouse 5k - 26:38 - first over 70 by far. pace was 8:36, best this year. Fred ran his best.

July right achilles tendonitis
August Menieres syndrome (vertigo) and took a good fall with damage to right hamstring.
New Haven 5k - Sept 5 - 31:47. a pace of 10:14 (was 27:48 last year!) But at least I finished! Last year I came down 28 sec/mile between my initial race of 9:25 in Milford and next race and almost a full minute/mile faster later in season.
East Haven 5k- Sept 10 - 30:06, a pace of 9:42, down 32 sec/mile from New Haven and 42 sec/mile from this course last year. I was the only serious runner over 70, so a first place trophy. Splits were 9:30 at 1 mile and 19:00 at 2 miles, so I slowed down to about 10:00 in the last mile. At least I stayed loose.
Branford 4 miler (Lenny's) - Oct 16 - 38:13, a pace of 9:34 (down 45 sec/mile - last year 8:49) - quite windy - first place by over a minute over Jack Doyle (but 60 year olds were terrific). Splits at 9:15, 19:05, 28:55?
Lightnouse 5k - Oct 30 - 28:23, a pace of 9:10 (I took off 5 sec to take off socks after 2 miles) - last year 8:36 - splits at 8:49, 18:20, ?. Easily in first place over 70, but there were lots of fast 60's.
West Haven 3.02 mile - Nov 6, 26:27, a pace of 8:45 (??), with splits at 8:50 and18:05???. Trophy for 2nd over 60.
VA run on Veterans Day. 5k, 29:12, a pace of 9:25, with splits at 9:25 and 18:34 (?). Medal for first over 70. But the course was about 30 sec longer than 2 years ago when I ran it in 27:28.
Wallingford 5 miler Nov 20. 47:22, a pace of 9:28, with splits at 9:08, 19:18 (lost 1 minute on long hill), 28:40, 38:08. First by far over 70, with a 69 year old far ahead
Christopher Martin 5k - Dec 11 (cold!), 27:45, a pace of 8:57 with splits at 8:55 and 17:57. First in 70-74 by a minute over Jack Doyle, but Ron Berthasavage ran a minute faster than me for the 75-79 division. I was 907 out of 2138 runners. Sheridan Bauman ran a 6:30 pace but was second in her division over 40.

Milford 5k Sept 15 - 28:10 - 9:04 pace, first over 60, (mile 1: 8:30, mile 2 9:00, mile 3 9:42)
Shin splints from Milford, then back tendonitis from canoeing.
Lighthouse 5k Oct 28 (after 6 weeks tendonitis layoff) 28:59 - 9:20 pace, first over 70 (mile 1 9:00, mile 2 9:34, mile 3 9:26)
VA 5k Nov 12, 28:50, 9:17 pace, second to John Courtemanche who was 22:30!.
Cheshire Hot Cocoa Nov 17, 27:46, 8:57 pace, second again to John Courtemanche who was 22:18.

Cheshire April 28 - 5k - 1st in 9:47 9:00 first mile then slower 361/870 (Claudia O'Connell was 9:38)
Milford May 12 - 5k - 4th in 9:40 (John Courtmanche (70), Mark Pisani (70), John Howell (77) ahead. First two miles in 9:30, 240/543
Orange May 18 - 5k - 1st in 9:38, 61/226
Bridgeport May 26 - 5k - 1st in 9:06 pace (28:12), 227/570. the judge John Cronan ran with 31 year old Kris Odonnell of East Haven at a 9:15 pace. Monica Roche in 9:58. 2nd male over 70 was at 10:54.
Southport, June 1 - 30:08 - 9:44 pace - first mile in 9:30. hot temperature and rocky road - no trophy for 70+ and there were five 60+ runners ahead of me (I was the only one over 70).
Hamden, June 8 - 28:42 - 9:14 pace - very hilly - only a medal for first place over 70 (Doyle behind me by 3 minutes). Met Chris and Heather who live on Whitney Ave near East Rock.
Branford Road Race - June 16 - 45:46 - 9:09 pace. 10/17 among 70-74 and 11th over 60. Courtemanche ran in a 7:22 pace! 977 out of 2034. No good runner at 75 or older. Others in 70-74 category ahead of me: Morgan Shipway in 8:25; Lee Bradley in 8:29; Thomas Costello 8:33; Mike Dore 8:43; James McCormack 8:50; Thomas Pollard 8:53; Jerry Brown 9:03; John Cietanno 9:05 (they were all 70 or 71). I was ahead of Michael Pisani who ran 9:30 and George Papuga at 11:32. I was 11/32 among 65-69. Among 60-64, I was 31/ ~75.
Fairfield 5K - June 22 - 28:02, 9:02 pace - 3rd place trophy after Jerry Brown (26:00) and a guy from England. 429/1350. Mike Goldman who was 76 also ahead of me in 26:35.
New Haven 5k Road Race - Sept 2 - 29:34, 9:32 pace - 11th in 70-74, with Ed O'Connell ahead at 21:10, age 74. Only one over 75 ahead of me was Michael Goldman from New York in 28:57 (9:21). The air was very heavy and everyone was slowed. I was 1458 out of 3731. Bill Borla, aged 73, ran 21:10!, a 6:50 pace!! John Courtmanche ran the 20K in an 8:15 pace. Claudia O'Connell was at 29:12. John Howell was behind me at 29:38. Jack Cronan ran in 25:06!
Stratford (Lordship) 5k Runabout - Sept 7 - 28:39, 9:13 pace. Second place after Michael Pisani who was 25 something. Ran with Clare Mahoney who out-kicked me. A beautiful day for running! Course might have been a bit long (i.e. maybe better than 9:13 pace)
Milford 5k Foran High School - Oct 19 - first place over 60 with 29:37 - 9:33 pace
Lighthouse 5k Oct 27 - first place over 70 with 28:58 - 9:20 pace - exactly same as last year
Stratford 5k Nov 2 - second over 70 with 28:28 - 9:10 pace - John Gibbons, 71, of Greenwich ran 27:07. I was 334 out of more than 2,000 runners. This time I out-kicked Clare Mahoney.\
Stratford again 5k Nov 10 - first over 60 at 9:00 pace (no exact time because I went into the chute for the 10k instead of the 5k - but I passed 3 miles in 27 minutes exactly)
Christopher Martins, Dec 8 - 27:59 9:02 pace 802 out of 1900 runners. First mile in 8:45. 3/5 over 70 behind John Courtmanche, 71, (7:11 pace) and James Segaloff, 70, (8:10 pace). The first over 75 was Jim Quinn of Stonington with a pace of 10:12.
