Bridgeport May 25 - 5k - 2nd out of 6 for 70-79 in 10:02 pace (last year 9:06 pace) (31:11), Michael Pisani (71) was ahead of me at 8:48. Miles in 9:45, 10:05, 10:15 [sum = 30:05 at 3 miles]. 276/541 (50%)
May 31 - Hamden Hills (and I mean HILLS!). 5k in 33:41.91 only a 10:51 pace because it was so hilly and gravelly. First two miles uphill in 11:05 and 11:10 paces, so I gained a bit coming back downhill. John Howell (79) was ahead of me at a 10:04 pace. Also Neal Wellins (70) 20 sec ahead of me. No trophies and glasses only for 6+ only. 45/76 Stephanie Shannon from Clinton(10:22) gave me a ride back. Nobody ran this course fast. Only 3 runners under 7 min/mile!
June 8 - Sun - Bridgeport Black Rock. 5k in 31:04, 9:57 pace, with loss of one minute (20 sec/mile) on steep hill. 5th over 70. Mike Pisani and 3 others ahead of me, none over 71 years old. miles in 9:50, 9:40, 9:30 if you don t count big hill in mile 2-3.
June 15 - Sun - Branford 5 miles. hot (80 degrees) 50:10 - 10:02 pace, lost 10% from last year. 2nd over 75 way behind Ed O Connell who ran an 8:30 pace (he is also 75). 9 ahead in 70-74 category, no one 74, only Mike Dore 73. Courtmanche (71) was first in 7:35 pace. Mike Pisani (71) ran in 9:22. Jessica Souza from Prospect just ahead of me. Tech shirt instead of trophy or medal. 1213/1914. Anissa Pellegrino (Gentile) ran at a 10:24 pace
June 21 - Sat - Fairfield 5K 30:13, 9:45 pace 2nd 75-79 after Michael Goldman (78) of New York who was 28:51 (9:17 pace). 653/1290. Jerry Brown (72) was 2nd in 70-74 in 25:21 (8:20 pace). I would have been 4th in this division. Alexander Metro was 5th in 35:09. I would have been second in 65-69 division!
June 29 - Sun - Doc s Race - Orange. Hot. I ran slow 31:41 (10:12 pace) but still got the first place trophy for 75-79. John Courtmanche (71 - 23:33), Ray Prest (74-24:56), Whitey Zyko (71 - 27:32) and George Gillespie (72 - 30:04) were ahead of me in the 70-74 division.
July 4 (Friday) - Courtney Honda Independence 5000 - 5K -Foran HS, Milford - 31:03, 10:00 pace, 3rd place (out of 9) after John Courtmanche (71 - 7:30) and Lee Bradley of Newington (72 - 7:40 pace) 152/351 well ahead of Neal Wellins who ran in 10:59 (He had beaten me in Hamden Hills)

Sept 6 Lordship Stratford 5k. 31:33 (10:09 pace) first over 75, but behind Donald Smith, 70, 23:26, Paul Couzelis, 71, 24:15, John Gibbons, 72, 27:47 and Mike Pisani, 71, 27:56.
In France in Sept-Oct I took spironolacone and potassium and overcame the potassium deficit that plagued me all year.
Nov 1. The Vicki Soto 5k in Stratford - cold, windy and light rain. I started slow at 10 min for first mile, but finished in 30:18, a 9:46 pace, behind John Gibbons (72) same as last year. None of the other 6 over 70 were anywhere near us.
Nov. 11 VA hospital race. 188/300 30:49, 9:57 pace 4/10 in age bracket behind Ronald Dombrowski, 71 from Uncasville (8:34 pace), Mike Pisani, Stratford, 71, (8:44 pace) and Jonathan Yuen 70 from Katonah (9:47 pace). Note. When I was 70, I ran it in an 8:52 pace! I ve lost l minute per mile in 5 years. Jack Cronan, 68, ran in 8:24. Linda Cordova 49 from Hamden ran in 8:05.
Nov 15. Southern Connecticut State University Teachers Trot - 5k - 31:05, 10:01 pace, (was the course distance accurate??) Cold, ice on the little puddles. One hill in middle. No one else running over 58 years old. No trophies or medals, not even age group recognition.
Nov. 22. Hot Cocoa in Cheshire. 29:45. 9:35 pace. 9:45 (more uphills first mile), 9:25, 9:38 splits. First over 70. Neal Wellins and another 71 year old were 2 minutes behind me. 40 sec slower than 2 years ago. 314/717
Nov 27, Thanksgiving race in Stratford. 2/5 in 70-79 behind Mike Pisani. I was 29:21 (9:27 pace) and Mike was 27:06 (8:24 pace which I would have been 4 years ago since he is 71. I was 349th out of 899. It snowed a little flurry as we started!
Dec 7, Bridgeport 5k. 28:29. 9:11 pace. 70/162. One other runner over 60, Fred Martin ran in 9:01 pace. No one else over 70.
Dec 14. Christopher Martin race. 29:28. 9:29 pace. First in 75 division. 1007/2058. Ryan Laemel won with a sub 5:00 pace! No one else 75+ near me. Courtemanche (72) won over 70 with a 7:21 pace. Others ahead of me were Turkington (70), Segaloff (71), Fuller (71), Fair (72).
Running-2015-9:16 (age 75-76)
April 12 Julia s Run from Yale out St Ronan s. Only runner over 70, so nice trophy. 42:30 (10:45, 10:27, 10:50, 10:28 = 10:38 average). Hill at top of Prospect. Exhausted afterwards! 153/215
April 19. Spring Glen (Hamden) 5k. Not much competition over 70, so another trophy. 32:28. Rocky road and exhausted last mile. 10:27 pace. 128/207
April 26. Cheshire 5k (with half marathon). 31:33, 10:10 pace (9:38, 10:30, 10:15), very tired last mile. First over 75. 400/887. John Howell was second at 33:44. There was no 3rd. Neal Wellin (71) was 4th over 70 in 34:27. Joseph Heffernan (71), who ran with Charlie Robbins and whose wife runs with Charlie s daughter, was first over 70 with 7:35 pace! Guy Pulino (70) ran in 8:51 pace. Joe DaSilva (71) was 3rd just behind me. Mariah Sage from ~60 Lyon St ran at 9:20 pace. Claudia O Connell (64) won her division at a 9:10 pace. Bridget Bouraud (41) won her division at a 7:11 pace. Most amazing was little 6 yr old Viola Lapham who beside me and ended up at a 10:27 pace (see photos)! John Courtemanche ran the half marathon in an 8:35 pace.
May 3. North Haven 5k 31:31 10:10 pace (no splits), not so tired at end. Only runner over 70. 88/154. Sue Schumacher, daughter of Ross Lanier from Pacers, ran a 7:56 pace and her two boys a minute slower. Cheri s son Will Banks at 10 years old ran a 6:50 pace. Bert Sandoval from Santa Barbara ran a 7:08 pace to take the over 60 trophy (65). I was 5th over 60.
off to France
May 17. 10k at Belleville-sur-mer. Last with time of 72:08. Lost several minutes with very stony route, not to mention a long very steep hill. I ran easily 6:30/k for the first 3 minutes (=10:30 mile) and finished tired at 7:00/mile (=11:20/mile)
May 29. 5k at Montville. I didn t get my time and I don t believe what they gave me. They say 34:57 but I think it was 33:40. 159/188
June 7. 5k in North Haven. 31:44. 10:14 pace. 2nd to John Howell. Splits in 10:20, 10:25 and 10:00 (for once I sped up!) Howell went out at an 8:50 pace and I caught only 30 sec of the 90 seconds he gained on me, as he finished in 30:44. I ran alongside Kim Wojciechowski, and well behind Jimine Ruggiero whom I will see as well as Howell in Branford.
June 13. 5k in Beardsley Park. 32:50. 10:24 pace. 1st over 70 (Richard Demarco behind me despite his boastfulness before the race). Splits in 9:40, 10:50 and 11:15. First mile downhill, last mile uphill (of course, running along the river!), middle mile in zoo. 26/54
June 21. 5 mile Branford. 50:46. 10:10 pace compared to 10:02 in 2014. First over 75 (John Howell was 51:13). Splits in 9:45 then 10:00 each mile except for the hill where I lost a minute. 916/1460. Mike Song, 51, ran 6:49 pace and was 5th in division. Claudia O Connell, 64, ran 9:37 and was also 5th in her division. Winners were Kenyans and Ethiopians running well under 5 minute miles. Many other runners from out of state. Lee Bradley, 73, won the 70-74 with 8:09 pace. No other 70-74 runner in front of me was older. Courtmanche was injured with "IT problem" John Silver won his division.
June 27. 5k Fairfield. 30:19. 9:46 pace compared to 9:45 pace last year. Third after Mike Goldman (78 - he ll be 79 this summer) 30:02 and John Howell (79) 30:08. splits in 9:40, 9:43, 9:55 (tired last mile). 552/1111) Alex Metro was 35:36. He was the only runner in the category older than 72. John Samsel (71) won the 70-74 in 22:46! This was an exception to there not being anyone older than me ahead of me, but I was pleased to be so close to them (see last year s New Haven road race).
July 4. 5k Milford Foran HS. 31:46. 10:14 pace compared to 31:03 last year. Third after Lee Bradley (73, 7:47 pace) and Jonathan Yuen (70, at 9:40 pace. There were 5 70-79 after me. My splits in 9:46, 11:00 (hills!), 10:00, 246/360 Larry Inge was third in the 60-69 with at a 7:29 pace! Cheri s son Will Banks also got a third. Met Gus Davis, friend of Laura as pathologist at Yale. Someone much older than me beat me: Geoff Etherington ran a 9:20 pace !!!
September 12. 5k East Haven. 34:41. 11:09 pace, slowest ever. First mile was 10:20, and then I suffered. Much too hot. First place trophy for 75-80. Third over 70 behind Guy Pulino (71) and Jonathan Yuen (70). 168/218. Larry Inge won the 65-70 division and was third over 60. Mike Song also ran well (19:45). For once I was behind Patty Carton by 17 sec. Annalisa Paltauf of New Haven won for women in 10:41 pace
September 20, East Rock to top and back. 4.7 mile. 51:46. 2nd over 70 behind Guy Pulino who ran in 42:02. Compare time to 48:30 in 2010. Lost 196 minutes (5 miles by 8 seconds x 5 years = 200) Jack Cronan was 43:22.
September 26, Nepal run Horsely Avenue Branford, less that 5K 29:19. Larry Inge was second and also thought the course was short. According to their markers I was 9:20 at one mile and was 14:30 at the half-way point. If the distance was correct I ran a 9:30 pace, but I doubt it!
October 10, Bridgeport Seaside Park for Habitat for Humanity. 30:51, 9:57 pace. Behind John Gibbons (73) and Mike Pisani (72). Larry Inge ran in 21:41 for first over 60! Miles in 9:50, 10:00, 10:00
October 18, West Haven 5k. 31:28, 10:08 pace 3rd behind Guy Pulino (70) and Whitey Zyko (73). Miles in 9:58, 10:28, 10:00. Jack Cronan is now 69.
October 24, Westbrook 5k. 32:08 10:20 pace. 4th after Guy Pulino (70-8:30), Mike Dore (74-9:05) and Dick Walsh (74-9:16). Miles in 9:55, 10:35, 10:20 ? last part uphill. Arrived late with Larry when no one at Bridgeport race and was not registered. Marie Davenport first and Sybil Shapiro second - never before seen race won by two women!
October 31, Hammonasset 5k. 31:25, 10:07 pace first over 70. 152/271. miles in 9:55, 9:57, then slowed for a mile with rocks. Larry Inge was second over 60 in 22;31. Courtemanche ran the half marathon.
November 7, another Hammonasset 5k. 29:46, 9:36 pace, second over 70 after Mike Zeranski (72) in 28:18, miles in 9:38, 9:46, 9:35(?). 178/330 Larry as first over 60 in 20:43. flat course.
November 15, Beardsley Park 5k 29:50, 9:37 pace. John Gibbons (73) ran faster but ran more than 5k. Thus I was first in the 65-79 division. There were no mile splits. A few little hills slowed me down.
November 21, Cheshire Hot Cocoa 5k 30:48, 9:55 pace (3 hills). 3rd behind Mark Turkington from Bolton, CT. (71) in 24:59 and Guy Pulino (70) in 26:43. Larry was 3rd over 60 in 21:41 min. (others were 60 and 61). miles in 10:11, 9:40, ~9:50
November 26, Thanksgiving at Branford 5k 29:40, 9:33 pace, 2nd behind Guy Pulino. splits in 9:04, 9:38 and ~9:50. Course was a bit downhill first mile and uphill last. Anissa Pellegrino (45) ran 25:54 next to her daughter Sophia Gentile, passing me at one mile.
November 28, Greenwich 5k 28:48, 9:16 pace. 3rd behind John Gibbons (73) and Louis Boburg (75), splits in 9:04, 9:38, 9:17
December 5, Trumbull 5k 30:35, 317/641. 9:50 pace because of two big hills, splits in 9:04, 10:42 and 9:50. 2nd after Mike Pisani (72 - 29:16) but ahead of Jonathan Yuen (31:40) who had beaten me in Milford. Larry ran in 21:59, a 7:06 pace and was first over 60! Andrea Kovacs (49) ran in 29:19, just behind Pisani (72) after losing me on the first hill.
Dec 13. Christopher Martin race. 29:31 (29:28 last year). 9:30 pace. First in 75 division well ahead of Gustave Davis and jack Doyle. 1074/2500.... Courtemanche (73) won over 70 with a 7:41 pace. Others ahead of me were Pulino (70) 8:16, Turkington (71) 8:09, Michael Tucker (70) 8:10, Paul Chignon (71) 8:49 and , and Ray Fair (73) in 9:26. Larry Inge won his 65-69 division in 21:00, a 6:45 pace!) over Randall Beach (65) in a 7:44 pace. Andrea Kovacs ran in 27:20, an 8:48 pace. Splits in 9:15, 9:37, 9:41
Running-2016-9:51 (age 76-77)
March 12 Stratford 5k short 100 feet. 32:32 (10:03, 10:20, 10:50?) 10:29 pace 4th behind Tom Maile (74, 23:42), John Gibbons (74, 29:45) and just behind Jonathan Yuen (71, 32:01). 191/340. Larry was second over 60 in 23.29. Stacy Rastocky was one minute ahead of me. I ran at the same pace I ran last April. As usual for Larry and me there was no runner older than us ahead of us.
April 2 Bridgeport 5k 30:36 - 9:51 pace (better than usual at this time of the year) - 78/159 no splits available. Was first over 60! Larry ran elsewhere today.
April 10, New Haven Julias Run - 4 miles with Prospect hill twice! - 40:55, 10:14 pace, better than last year which was 42:30 - 124/207, 3rd behind and Mike Pisani (9:32 pace) and John-Eric Nelson (70) in 7:59 pace. Others: Erin Brough (32) in 45:30, Chloe Moss won in 6:46 pace. Hailey Davis and Meredith Magenheim ran with me and finished with
10:35 pace.
April 17, Spring Glen - 5k in 31:36. 10:11 pace almost a minute faster than last years 32:28. A bit hilly and rocky. I was first over 70 - no competition. Chris Wirth was 2nd over 60 in . Nicole Deziel won the womens trophy, and Katie Metcalfe with Summer was 2 min. behind me. Cheris boy is not running but she was there as part of the PTA.
April 24, Cheshire 5k. 30:48, 9:56 pace almost a minute faster than last years 31:33. Only runner over 75. I ran at the start with John Courtemanche and Guy Pulino who won the over-70 division with 8:30 and 9:00 mile paces. (Neal Wellins was 3rd at a 10:52 pace so I would have been 3rd over 70), but with them I went out too fast (9:15 first mile), slowed to 10:37 second mile and came back with 10:00 for last mile. I was 373/871. Mike Song won for 50-54 at 6:23 pace.
April 30. Milford 5k. 31:32, 10:11 pace, no splits. Only runner over 70. I ran at start with Larry who did not try hard. 125/331.
May in France. lost 2 weeks and 1 race because of left ankle.
June 11. Beardsley Park 5k. 33:26 (last year 32:40). First mile in 9:45. Went with Larry and started with Andrea who ended up at 28:30 or so.
June 19. Branford. Knee collapsed at 5k and couldnt even walk (first time ever I couldnt finish a race!). At 3 miles I was good in 31:30. 9:45, 10:37, 11:08 (lost minute on hill) Ed OConnell (77) won 75+ in 45:54, a 9:15 pace. Dick Walsh (75) from Old Lyme was 2nd in 48:04. Mike Dore was 3rd in 49:33. I would not have placed, although I won this division last year! Guy Pulino won 70+ in 48:53, a 9:47 pace. Elizabeth Lopez ran in 57:31. Chris Goncarski (beautiful barefoot) did not finish. Geoff Etherington (87) passed me in 2nd mile and finished with 51:49! Mike Song was 5th in his division in 34:02. John Silver (66) was 4th in his division in 40:28 (8:07 pace). Larry did not race, but took care of me and drove me home.
Sept 30. Surgery for torn meniscus of left knee
Dec 11 - first over 75 in Christopher Martin race. 33:15 for 5k (compared to 29:36 in 2014 and 2015). A pace of 10:42. Jack Courtmanche said hell be 75 next year! He ran 24:19 for a 7:50 pace and yet was behind John-Eric Nelson, age 70, who ran in 23:44! Guy Pulino was 5th behind two others! I was about 1200 out of about 1800. A pace of 29:36 would have been 800/1800. Bill Gagnon, 80, ran 37:12 and spoke to me afterwards. Erin Brough was just behind me in 34:04. Eileen Martinez (36) ran in 37:34.
Running-2017 -(age 77-78)
April 9 - Julias Run for 4 miles. 45:43, a pace of 11:26 (compared to 42:30 in 2015 and 40:55 in 2016) miles in 11:07, 11:08, 12:00, 11:25 (slowed down). 125/172. 4th after Jack Cronan-70 (who fell and bled at finish line), John Eric Nelson (71) and Natan Bauman 70) who was just 1 minute ahead of me. Ran behind Lisa and Bernadette.
April 15 - Woodbridge 5k. No mile splits. No trophy over 70. 34:30 = 11:06 pace. Finished strong, passing several, including my neighbors at 74 Lyon, Duffy and ?
plantar fascitis and then bike accident, so I got out of shape in May.
June 18 - Branford 5 miler. 59:03, 11:49 pace. 3rd in 75-79 category, 4 seconds behind Tom Sullivan 77 of Ledyard who was 2nd. First was Dick Walsh 76 of Old Lyme in 51:44. Rode back on train with Ethiopian winners Abu Diriba and Bose Asseta. John Courtemanche won his division (he ll be 75 later this year) in 41:39, an 8:01 pace. I was 3/5 in my category and 1341/1584 overall. Much slower than pace in 2015 (50:10, 10:10) and 2014 (10:02).
June 24 - Fairfield 5k. 34:09, 11:03 pace in driving rain. Lost some time on gravel at end. First over 75 - only one other. splits in 10:45, 11:00. 709/1051. Went back towards train with Abu Diriba and Bose Asseta. He was overall third (5:02 pace) and she overall first among women (5:28 pace). Xiaochen Yang ran a 10:03 pace. John Samsel of New York (73) ran a 7:03 pace! James Segaloff of New Haven (73) ran in 8:29. His wife, Barbara (72) won her division in 9:04! Joe Kolok (73) from Brewster, New York, ran in 8:54. Derek McGlynn (look alike for Courtmanche) (62) won his division in 6:41. Courtmanche was not there, but maybe ran the half marathon next day.
Sept 4 - New Haven 5k. 36:47, 11:50 pace - 7/8 in division, 2184/2736. Others in M75: Dick Walsh (Old Lyme-76) 29:13, Michael Smith (Oxford-75) 29:24, Mike Dore (Westbrook-76) 31:45, Jay Charkow (Woodbridge-75) 34:34, Tom Sullivan (Ledyard-77) 35:03, Charles Merhls or Merlis (West Hartford-77) 36:35. Also M80 Tom Butterfield (Windsor-80) 28:22, Eric Seiff (Bronx-84) 33:34 and M75 for 20k: Thomas Pollard (Branford-75) 9:26 pace, Lee Bradley (Newington-75) 11:14 pace.
Sept 9 - East Haven 5k. 36:14, 11:41 pace - only runner over 70. 95/126 splits in 11:30, 11:44 and (?) 11:49. Mike Song won 50+ Ran with Carolyn Shea and Lilianne ?
Sept 16 - East Rock challenge 5k. 34:22, 11:05 despite hill - 4th over 70 behind Guy Pulino (8:29, 72), Jack Kennedy of North Haven (9:36, 72) and Jack Cronan (10:41, 70).
Sept 23 - Orange (Eli s) 5k - 34:21, 11:05, 76/119, uphill first half - 2nd over 70 behind Jonathan Yuen, 73 (10:25 pace) No other runner over 70. winner from Massachusetts ran a 5:30 pace!
Then a pulled groin muscle kept me out of running for a month.
October 28 - Milford (trick or trot) 5k - 34;33, 11:08, fairly flat - 1st over 70. 174/327. Monique Lescat got 2nd among women over 70 by walking/running. Lots of costumes!
November 5 - Milford Platt Tech 5k - 34:27, 11:06 pace, 130/159. Monique Lescat got 2nd among women over 70 running alongside me, just ahead of Monica Roche and Patty Carton. I was 7th over 70, but all were younger than me. John Gibbons, 75, came in at a 9:50 pace and Fernando Rincon, 76 at a 10:36 pace. Jonathan Yuen was 4th at 9:55. Julianne Glebus was 2nd 20-29 at 26 minutes. There were 3100 runners in the field!
November 12 - Guilford 5k - 34:43, 11:11 pace, 159/203. I was last of 4 over 70, all younger than me: Alex Silverman from MA at 8:05 pace, Guy Pulino at 8:53 pace and Jacob Licht in 33:08. Malcolm Connor, sprinter from Bridgeport and CCSU, was first in 5:32 and Felix Cancre, Yale 2017, was second with a super 5:34 pace (rode with him on train).
knee weakness, got an MRI and then appointment with Dr Ruwe who says the cartilage on the head of the left tibia is weakening and will eventually crumble - if I want to keep running I have to cut back (do biking instead) and lose weight. did not run for a month at all and did not train for Christopher Martin at all.
December 10 - Christopher Martins - 35:32, 11:27 pace, 2nd over 75 after John Courtemanche. (4th over 70) Jose Werneck, 80, ran in 33:03 (I think he took a photo with me afterwards) and Paul Shanahan, 80, ran in 34:22! 1205/1492. Erin Brough ran in 33:26.
Running-2018 -(age 78-79)
April 15 - Julias Run for 4 miles. 48:20, 2nd over 70 after Natan Bauman 71) who was just 1 minute ahead of me. 122/153 (.80). My pace was 12:05 (time compared to 45:43 in 2017 and 40:55 in 2016) (miles in 12:10, 12:10, 12:10 and 11:50). Melissa Kearns from Prospect (cf Cheshire) won over 40 in 32. Xiaochen ran in 36. Mary Lou Gaeta, 56, (cf Edgewood) ran with me until near the end when she rejoined Connie Anderson, 60.
April 22 - 5k in Guilford (Long Hill Road). 36:40, 11:50 pace, 2nd over 70 after Joe, 72 who was not far ahead of me. Last of 15-20 runners.
April 29 = 5k in Cheshire. 35:23, 1st over 75. Pace of 11:23. 504/843 (.60). Cold rain. (70-74 was Mark Turkington (74: 8:44), Guy Pulino (73: 9:08) and Nat Bauman (71:10:51)) Erin Brough and Claudia O Connell were just ahead of me. Larry drove me up and back. 9/21 top runners were women!
May 6 - 5k in Edgewood Park. 37:43, 12:10 pace. 85/108 (.80), only runner over 70. Slowed by rocky route.
May 13 - 5k from Milford hospital. 34:44, 11:11 pace. 4th in 70-79 behind John-Eric Nelson (72,8:20), Jonathan Yuen (74, 10:15) and a 70 yr old doctor No runner over 80. 266/448
May 20 - 5k at North Branford High School. 35:40, pace of 11:29. Miles in 11:00, 11:45 and 11:45. Behind (again!) Guy Pulino (73, 9:16) and Jonathon Yuen (74, 10:14) 237/432 (.55) Tony Medeiro, 86, won his division with pace of 15:49.
May 26 - 5k on Hamden greenway. too hot! 37:19, a pace over 12:00. First mile in 10:50, then wilted in heat. Second over 70 behind Will Shortell (72: 9:35) who ran in 30:26. 79/113 (.70). Marylou Gaeta and Connie Anderson came in later in 41:21. 5/12 top 10 were women.
June 2 - 5k at Jennings Beach Fairfield. too hot! 36:20, a pace of 11:43. miles in 11:10, 11:50 and 12:00. Lost a minute by stopping for water and running on gravel patch. 4th in 75-79 behind Tom Maile from MA (75) who ran 26:50, David Cook of Lyme (75) who ran 33:03 and John Gibbons of Greenwich (76) who ran 34:45. I was 739/1069, ahead of 3 in 75-79 category and way ahead of only runner over 80 who ran 41:22. Raissi Bysiewicz ran 24:31 and Anna Shields, 3rd overall ran 17:31 far ahead of 2nd woman who was 36th in 20:53. Anna, too, complained to me of the heat. Jim Segaloff (74) ran in 26:30 to win the 70-74. Brian Green, 83, won his division with pace of 13:30.
June 9 - 5k at Gulf Beach Milford in 35:08, 11:20 pace. BEER GLASS for trophy. 2nd over 70 behind Alex Silverman (72) who ran in an 8:56 pace [my pace at 72]. Jeffrey Townsend won with a 5:56 pace. No runner over 80.
June 17 - Branford 5 miles in 58:49, 11:46 pace. 1289/1575, 6/12 over 75 and 12/25 over 70. 82 degree heat burned my feet. 6th in 75-79 division behind Tom Costello (75, 9:58), Carl Fuller (75, 10:33), Mike Dore (77, 11:21), Richard Walsh (77, 11:27) and John Beardslee (76, 11:49). When I was 75, I ran Branford in 10:02. Over 80 was Boris Aronson of Worcester in 63:51 and Paul Shanahan of Cheshire in 69 min (he beat me last year at Christopher Martins). Went with Randy Beach who ran in 43+ but was still 7th in 65-69 division. Same speed as Raissi. Kristen Kennedy the Metronorth conductor ran 43, a pace of 8:39 (knew Mark Gilhooly as conductor). Barefoot Ric Villareal ran in 47+.
June 24 - Doc s race in Milford. 35:08, 11:19 pace. (hill). 2nd (out of 4) in 75-79 after Mike Pisani (75 from Stratford) who ran at 9:55 pace [my pace at 75 was 9:11]. The 3rd, Gerald Patrick was far behind me at 14:16/mile. Gus Davis was first at 80 with 13:56 pace. Patty Carton and Monica Roche were close behind me. Guy Pulino was behind me with muscle cramps. Shannon Meseck from Derby won at 42 with 8:09 pace. Elizabeth Fengler (22 from Wallingford) was 2nd overall at 6:13 pace. The two Brazilians, Wesley Oliveira and Wantuik Souza were 4th and 6th with paces of 6:27 and 6:36.
July 4 - 5k from Foran school, Milford. very hot. Ran in 38:26, a pace of 12:23, with frequent water stops. 4th over 70 with one guy just 20 seconds in front of me. behind Michael Carius (70, 10:26), Frank Maco (71, 10:37) No one older than me. Allison Warren ran in 30.
Sept 2 - New Haven 5k. hot and humid. Ran in 37:29, a pace of 12:04. 5th over 75 behind James Segaloff (74, 8:55), Arthur Rodia of Woodbury (75, 9:07), Mike Dore (77, 11:03) and John Gibbons (76, 11:09). 2045/2684. Tom Butterfield ran in 30:30 at age 82. I would have been 2nd over 80, just ahead of Tom McIntosh of Coventry and Eric Seiff from the Bronx. I haven t run as fast as Butterfield since I was 75. I ran just behind Mary Lou Gaeta and Erin Brough, having run with them at some points earlier. Also 1 minute behind claudia o connell
Sept 8 - East Haven 5k, cool, perfect weather. Ran in 35:40, a pace of 11:29. Trophy as 2nd over 70. I ran with Amanda Perrin. Margaret Maigret ran in 25.
Sept 16 - East Rock challenge 5k. 37:30, pace of 12:08 First and only over 75 (trophy). Slower than last year s 34:22. Slowed by ankle problem. ran just behind Emilee Sousa, but well behind Guy Pulino (73, 9:14) George Ripley (70, 9:54) and Steve Joy (60, 7:30).
Sept 23 - East Rock 5k on the streets in 36:10, a pace of 11:39. First over 70. Margaret Maigret was first woman - her time was 24:26. Her father walked and was not far behind me in 40+
Sept 30 - Southport 5k. 34:58, pace of 11:16, 4th over 70 after Robert Hein, 71 from Mt Vernon, NY who ran in 8:27 pace, Mike Pisani, 75 from Stratford who ran in 9:40 pace and James Ashbrook, 73 from Monroe just ahead of me. There were 5 runners over 70 behind me. Ania Mastriano, 45, from Milford ran in 24:37 (3rd in her division) I was 337/439. There was no runner 80+ except Herman Bernshtein
Oct 7 - West Haven boardwalk. 34:51, pace of 11:13, Behind Tom Butterfield (82 from Windsor) who ran in 30:30 ! Spoke with him afterwards about Robbins, Tribou, Brown, Almond, Middletown, etc. Trophy as second over 70 behind Whitey Zyko (76, 10:16).
Oct 14 - Fairfield Jennings Beach 5k. 34:56, pace of 11:15, miles in 11:20 and 11:14. Lost the five seconds running twice on the gravel patch. I was the only runner over 70 - hence a medal. Magdalena Feujter was first woman in 26.
Oct 21 - Branford 2.7 mile out Linden avenue in 28:53 (not adjusted for 10 seconds missing the turnaround, but I think the course was less than 2.7. Pace of 10:42. Behind Guy Pulino (73, 8:56) and Jonathan Yuan (74, 9:59). This is the fastest pace since before the surgery. Elizabeth Fengler was second overall.
Oct 28 - East Rock from State Street - 4 miles (up, back, up back) 43:20, pace of 10:50 if the distance was correct. Kelsey Eng ran second woman but fell near end. I ran with Cindy Gibbons near end and just behind James Kennedy, 73.
Nov 3 - Vicki Soto 5k in Stratford - 34:29, pace of 11:06. Very windy. 4/20 over 70 behind John Gibbons, 3rd in pace of 10:14 (we spoke beforehand). Bob Listorti of Milford (70, 8:23) was first Frank Maco (71, 10:04) was second and Gibbons, 76 was 3rd in 10:14. I was 1065/>3000 runners.
Nov 11 - North Haven 5k - 32:55, pace of 10:36. 2nd over 70. No awards. Rode home with George Ripley from Glastonbury, 70, who recalls Charley Robbins, etc. He ran in 8:47.
Nov 17 - Cheshire Hot Cocoa 5k - 35:46, pace of 11:31, hilly, 398/541. 3rd over 70 behind Alex Silverman (73: 8:10) and Bill Lucas (70, 10:18)
Nov 22 - (Thanksgiving) Stratford. 5k in 35:24 = 11:25 pace. Very cold so I wore socks until last half mile. splits in ll:36, 11:30, 11:05, 5th over 70 behind three guys (71 & 72) at 10:03, 10:49 and 10:53. Best was Wayne Theriault of Milford who ran 8:55 at age 70.
Dec 2 - West Haven boardwalk 5k in 34:24 - 11:05 pace, cold rain. One other runner over 70 was John-Eric Nelson at 9:10 pace
Dec 9 - Christopher Martin, 5k in 33:06 (10:40 pace) 2nd over 75 behind Tom Baker, 75 who ran in a 10:22 pace. Jose Werneck (Bristo, 81 ran in 32:44, a pace of 10:33) and Paul Shanahan in 37:15, a pace of 12:08. Andrea ran in a 10:30 pace. placed 1009/1415 Randy Beach (68) was 7th in his division with an 8:33 pace. for 70-75, Ralph Morelli (71, 8:22), Wayne Theriault (70, 8:39) John-Eric Nelson (72,8:45); Anthony Brignola (70, 8:56) Guy Pulino (73, 9:08) David Carlson (63, 8:56) recalled duking it out with Frank Dunham.

Sept 2 - New Haven 5k Road Race 3rd over 80 in 40:31 (13:02 pace), passed in last 100 yards by 86-year-old Eric Seiff. Tom Butterfield at 82 ran way ahead in 30:44 (9:55 pace). I placed 2167/2488
Sept 8 - East Haven, only runner over 80. 5k in 38:46, a pace of 12:30 . Bob Ward, 75, ran in 28:21 (9:10 pace) and we recall Charlie Robbins together. Larry Inge drove me out and back. I ran with Laura Shum from Milford. I placed 113/123.
