Shell mobiles
The Seville Statement on Violence |
Somehow during these years, I found some time to work with my hands from time to time. I collected shells from the beach across from our house and constructed mobiles from the jingle and conch shells (as well as their eggs as shown in the one illustrated). The jingle shells gave bright colors (orange, yellow, white, black), while the conch shells in various forms to which the waves had eroded them, provided fascinating shapes. Here is one of my favorites.
Some of the mobiles were constructed in order to "wind up" and then wind down over several minutes giving little clashing noises in a clockwork escape mechanism, or in a large fishing-pole arrangement with colored stones at one end and clashing jingle shells at the other. For many years the mobiles decorated our home along with the many artistic productions that Lindsay created and the copy of the de Ribera painting of Diogenes. I also made a little scrapbook with photos of them which I keep to this day.
