Algeria

President Abdelaziz Bouteflika has written to the UNESCO Director-General adhering to the culture of peace and the celebration of the International Year for the Culture of Peace. The campaign was begun by the Algerian National Commission for UNESCO with a meeting on 1-2 September involving 48 national associations active at the grass roots.

A number of events have been scheduled by the National Commission to mark the launch of the Year on 14 September. These included a round table at the ENTV (Television), a classical music concert on the site of TIPAZA, a model lesson on the culture of peace in national teacher training establishments, and a ceremony at which doves or balloons will be released in the centre of Algiers. In the following days, a course was inaugurated at universities dedicated to peace and non-violence and using their Internet network, an exposition of paintings at the palace of culture, as well as cultural and artistic activities in the network of houses of culture. On 17 September a sermon on the culture of peace and non-violence has been organized by the High Islamic Council in the network of mosques throughout the country. Throughout this period the Manifesto 2000 is being copied and distributed in millions of copies to collect the maximum number of signatures.

Eritrea

The President Afwerki wrote to the UNESCO Director-General on 26 June 1999 expressing unqualified adherence to the International Year for the Culture of Peace and the Manifesto 2000 and enclosing his signature. He congratulated the Director-General for having assumed a leadership role within the UN system for the International Year.

Iran

On occasion of the International Day for Peace, the Iranian Commission for Unesco has translated the Manifesto 2000 into Persian.

A photography competition has been organised in collaboration with the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Arts and collaboration has been set up with the Iranian ministry of education's scientific committee in charge of curricula development, for the preparation of subjects and school texts related to the culture of peace.

Thanks to a collaboration with the Iranian publishers' Union in Tehran, the publishers actively promoting a culture of peace will receive an award for their activities.

Jordan

A press conference has been held on 14 September in UNESCO House to launch the Year with national television coverage including journalists from the Jordanian Radio and TV corporation, the English and Arabic language daily newspapers, Petra National News Agency and Associated Press. Participants were addressed by the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Culture, the UN Resident Representative and the Secretary General of the National Commission for UNESCO. The Jordan office of UNESCO has produced and distributed their own posters based on the Manifesto 2000. They are also translating the video and radio spots into Arabic and distributing them to the media in both English and Arabic.

On 15 September, there was the opening of the "UNESCO Peace Room" at a school on Peace Street. This street crosses the conflicted zones of the region as it runs through the Jordan Valley from Amman across the River Jordan towards Jerusalem. The room is fully equipped with computer access to Internet and satellite access for television and it will serve not only for student instruction but also for literacy and vocational training of villagers in the local community.
