Mauritania
The mobilization to launch the IYCP on 14 September has been organized by a National Committee for the International Year for the Culture of Peace, organized by the Mauritanian National Commission for Education, Science and Culture and including representatives of the National Education Ministry, the Ministry of Communication, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the Secretary of State for the Fight against Illiteracy, the Commissioner for Human Rights and the Fight against Poverty, the Federation of UNESCO Clubs, the Associated schools, local NGOs, youth associations, associations of traditional artists and others.
A major event took take place at the House of Youth including:
" A round table on the culture of peace presided by the Secretary General of the National Commission for UNESCO and addresses the themes of Islam, peace and non-violence, peace and development, and democracy and peace;
" Theatrical and poetry presentations;
" Slogans and flags for the IYCP on the streets of the city;
" A televised debate on El Ligha El Moubacher on the themes of the round table;
" A radio broadcast on the radio El Ligha el Mevtouh
" Radio programmes on culture of peace in national languages (Poular, Wolof, Soninke)
A major campaign for gathering signatures on the Manifesto 2000 is underway not only in the city of Nouakchott, but also in the different regions of the country.
Qatar
A festival to launch the IYCP has been organized on 14 September at the Qatar National Museum with the participation of the Minister of Education and Higher Education and other personalities. Media representatives, dignitaries, writers and diplomats have been invited and it will be recorded and broadcast through the Qatar Satellite Television Channel. At the Al-Khot Fort a cultural symposium focused on the culture of peace from an Islamic point of view and was also recorded and broadcast by the Qatar Satellite Channel. The Qatari network of ASP schools has been mobilized to celebrate the event with speeches and addresses delivered through the school radio, competitions focused on the theme culture of peace and radio and television interviews. A plastic arts exhibition focusing on tolerance and peace was held in the Halls of Al-Bidaa Park with prizes awarded to the winning artists by the Qatar National Bank.
The Arabic version of the "Peace Pack" for primary schools has been launched at the same time under the supervision of the UNESCO Doha office, for which a press release has been issued to all of the Arab States of the Gulf. The UNESCO office has also published the text of the Manifesto 2000 in local newspapers along with articles and interviews relevant to the culture of peace
Somalie
Un atelier consacré à l'éducation civique, avec la participation de représentants de l'ensemble du pays s'est tenu à Hargeisa, NW Somalie pendant une semaine. Cette rencontre a été précédé par une campagne de sensibilisation nationale sur la culture de la paix organisée par les Peace Resources Centres de l'UNESCO implantées dans le pays. Dans ce cadre, la journée du 14 septembre a été marquée par une cérémonie officielle.
Sudan
La Commission nationale a préparé un dossier d'information sur le lancement de l'Année internationale à l'intention des médias nationaux. Un séminaire consacré à la Culture de la paix a réuni à Khartoum du 5 au 7 septembre des représentants d'Afrique de l'Est et d'Afrique Centrale.
Les jeunes du Club UNESCO "Step-by-Step" actifs dans le domaine de la promotion de la communication interculturelle ont fait de nombreuses activités pour célébrer le lancement de l'Année internationale. Leur campagne de sensibilisation include des expositions photographiques et de livres, des concours dans les écoles sur le theme de la culture de la paix (poésies, dessins, music, théatre, etc.) ainsi que la projection de films.
